Richard Alcoy

Richard Alcoy, is a guitarist, at home with varied musical styles ranging from classical, country to jazz.  From an early age, he has mimicked the style and music of Chet Atkins, his boyhood idol.  Little did he know that he would not only meet his idol but also play for the annual Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention in Nashville, Tennessee.

He has just concluded his concert tour in Australia under the Guitar Masters Association and is currently performing back in the United States as well as  in other countries.

Richard was born in the Philippines and at the early age of seventeen, he began performing guitar concerts.  In the 1980 Philippine Guitar Festival, Richard won two first prizes, in both Classical and Jazz guitar competitions.  He was the first guitarist to ever win both competitions, all in one day!  Upon graduation, his alma mater presented him a Special Award in Musical Performance.  A full scholarship in guitar and composition followed.  Richard has performed in many five-star hotels and also has worked in cruise ships which traveled around the world.

Richard is a member of the Dave Suverkrup Jazz Quintet of Los Angeles, California.  As a member of the Association of Fingerstyle Guitarists (AFG), he has been featured regularly in its quarterly convention in Anaheim, California.  Locally, under AFG's aegis, Richard gives concerts and master classes.  Recently, he has been featured in the Society's Newsletter, "The Sound Hole".

He recently released his debut CD Precious Companions.  The CD features works ranging from Bach to Hindemith along with his arrangements of some jazz and a traditional Philippine folk song.  On the liner notes of the CD, it says: "As my first produced CD, I heartily dedicate this to my early father-figure Chet Atkins who nourished my soul along with Andres Segovia & Laurindo Almeida."   When my father was working far away from home, their albums were my childhood constant Precious Companions.  The tracks recorded here are his reflections of their music.  Richard is currently working on a recording and publication of traditional music for guitar entitled Four Centuries of Spanish Heritage: Guitar Music of the Philippines.
